Materials
- Main fabric: 1.20–1.80 m (1 1/3–2 yd) medium-weight woven with some structure: suiting, twill, gabardine, linen blend, cotton sateen, wool blend, lightweight denim, jacquard or fine corduroy
- Fusible interfacing: for the front and back neck facings
- Buttons: about 1 cm (3/8″); the number depends on your size, so follow the markings on the pattern
- Bias binding: enough to finish both armholes
- All-purpose thread, a hand-sewing needle and a buttonhole foot if you have one
Pre-wash your fabric the way you will wash the finished vest. Allow extra fabric for one-way prints, stripes or plaids.
Pattern pieces
- Front, main fabric: cut 2
- Back, main fabric: cut 2
- Front Neck Facing, main fabric + interfacing: cut 2 + 2
- Back Neck Facing, main fabric + interfacing: cut 2 + 2
Check the grainline on every piece and lay them all in the same direction if your fabric has a nap. Transfer all darts, notches, button and buttonhole marks before you remove the paper.

Sizing guide
Drafted for a height of 1.68 m (5′6″). Choose your size by bust measurement, then check waist and hips. This is a fitted style: if you are between sizes, go with your largest relevant measurement and adjust the fit.

Sewing notes
Fit and style
Bust darts, front and back waist darts, back neck darts and a center-back seam give this vest its close, tailored shape. The pointed hem is the same on the front and back, and the vest is unlined: the neckline is finished with facings and the armholes with bias binding.
Fabrics
Choose a medium-weight woven with enough body to hold the fitted shape. For a softer look, a medium-weight linen or soft suiting works too. Avoid very stretchy fabrics.
Buttons
Buttonholes go on the Right Front. Always follow the number and position of the button marks printed on your size.
Sewing steps
Seam allowances are 1 cm (3/8″). Sew with right sides together and finish raw edges as you go.
- Sew the darts. Stitch the front bust and waist darts and the back waist and neck darts. Knot the thread tails at the points and staystitch the necklines.
- Sew the shoulders and press the seams open.
- Prepare the neck facings. Fuse the interfacing, join the facings at the shoulders and finish the outer edge.
- Attach the facing along the front opening and neckline, clip into the V point, understitch and turn it inside.
- Finish the lower front facing and baste the 3 cm (1 1/8″) hem in place.
- Make the buttonholes on the Right Front and sew on the buttons.
- Sew the center-back seam and the side seams. Press open.
- Bind the armholes with bias binding, then sew the pointed hem, mitring the corners. Press.
